Help Stop Mountain Top Mining

In an exciting new, national partnership between Rock the Earth and Earthjustice, we are taking a stand to stop the incredibly destructive mining practice known as Mountain Top Removal Mining!  You can be part of a photo petition campaign to save Appalachia’s Mountains by becoming a Mountain Hero.

What Is Mountaintop Removal Mining?

Mountaintop removal coal mining, often described as "strip mining on steroids," is an extremely destructive form of mining that is devastating Appalachia. In the past few decades, over 2,400 miles of streams and headwaters that provide drinking water for millions of Americans have been permanently buried and destroyed.  Local coal field communities routinely face devastating floods and adverse health effects. Natural habitats in some our country's oldest forests are laid to waste. Earthjustice has been in the courts and in Congress on behalf of local and national environmental and community groups to stop this destructive practice and protect Appalachia for future generations.

Summer Tour 2012 Rolls On

Rock the Earth's 9th consecutive summer tour has started out with a bang! This year our partner organization, Earthjustice, has helped Rock the Earth go high-tech! This year's summer touring crew will be using iPads to conduct a photo petition drive which will result in thousands of petitions being submitted to the Obama Administration in the fall. The objective of the photo petition is to bring a complete halt to Mountain Top Removal operations in Appalachia. All of us here at RtE are all hopefulthat your photos and thoughts will serve as a physical presence to take a stand with the people of Appalachia, and as a blow to MTR. To sign our photo petition please visit

Late Breaking News: RtE Victorious in Federal Court to Protect Colorado’s Roan Plateau!

The Bureau of Land Management didn't follow protocol when it approved a plan for allowing oil and natural gas development on the biologically rich Roan Plateau in western Colorado, a judge ruled on June 22, 2012.  U.S District Judge Marcia Krieger set aside the plan and ordered the agency to take another look.  Rock the Earth and several other conservation and sportsmen groups sued the agency in 2008 after the BLM approved drilling in phases on the Roan, including the largely undeveloped top of the plateau. Finding that the BLM did not consider all reasonably available options for the Roan as well as the cumulative impact that drilling would have on air quality in the region, Judge Kreiger remanded the BLM-approved drilling plan back to the agency for further study and review.

We’ll have a more comprehensive analysis of the case and Judge Kreiger’s opinion in our July edition of Rock the Earth Notes.

Key of Green: Stay Cool, Stay Green

While there’s nothing tempting than cranking up the air conditioning during a day of intense heat, consider some of the money you could save by embracing eco-friendly ways of keeping cool:

  • Take colder showers.  Adjusting the temperature gradually will ensure that the water is just warm enough.
  • Leave the windows open at night, and keep your blinds closed during the day. Avoid wearing heavy or excessive clothing.
  • Certain parts of your body often called pulse points have a larger effect on the rest of your body when you cool them.  Applying an ice pack or moist scarf to your wrists, neck, temple or inner thighs just might get the job done.
  • Last but not least: stay hydrated by drinking a lot of water (not sugary soda or caffeinated beverages). Keep a spray bottle handy so you can spritz some on your face as well!
