Matthew Conway
Matthew Conway sits on the Rock the Earth Legal & Technical Committee. From 2003-2006, Matt served on the RtE Board of Directors. In addition to his work with Rock the Earth, Matt has worked as an environmental professional since 1994. Presently, he is the Senior Environmental/Safety Engineer for an internationally-renown Fortune 500 manufacturer located in the western United States. He is directly responsible for all aspects of environmental/safety permitting and compliance as well as implementation, maintenance, and auditing of ISO 9001 and 14001 management systems. Prior to this position, Matt worked as a project manager and a field scientist for an environmental engineering and consulting firm for approximately 5 years. In this position, he provided environmental services to industries, commercial businesses, utilities, attorneys, municipal and state governments, and financial institutions. Matt's duties and responsibilities included: preparation of proposals, scopes of work, and budgets; investigation, characterization, and remediation of soil and groundwater contamination at hazardous waste and "Superfund" facilities; closure of underground storage tank (UST) systems; due diligence assessments; compliance audits; permit support activities; sampling and technical services; regulatory compliance; and waste management. Matt received his B.A. in 1989 and a M.S. in 1994. During his graduate studies, Matt jointly interned with Arizona Public Service and the University of Arizona's Environmental Research Laboratory. In additional to traditional technical environmental compliance work, he was directly responsible for maintaining a wastewater reuse project utilizing plant species adapted to brackish waters at an electrical generating station. Matt participated in the development of Best Management Practices (BMPs) for the beneficial on-site reuse of the wastewater for plants with landscape and wildlife habitat values. He also participated in a study that utilized several species of plants to intercept and transpire brackish wastewater from bottom ash and fly ash ponds resulting from coal combustion.
